Young People & Smoking

Our Stop Smoking Service aims to provide young people with information about smoking so that they are able to make informed choices about starting or continuing to smoke.

  • In 2003, 11% of 11-15 year olds in Sandwell were smoking
  • 70% of adult smokers started when they were younger than 15
  • Around half of the teenagers who carry on smoking will eventually be killed by tobacco, 50% of these will die in middle age.

Services Available

  • Young people aged 12 years and over are able to attend any of the stopsmoking  groups and clinics in Sandwell
  • Confidential support for those wanting to quit
  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy available to young people 12 years and over
  • Our Advisors work in partnership with other Organisations in Schools, Youth Clubs and Colleges to offer help to those wanting to quit either as one-to-one sessions or in groups.

Training Available

  • Free training for those working with young people – Teachers, Learning Mentors, Support Staff, Community Workers
  • The training will provide those working with young people with the knowledge and skills to successfully run stop smoking groups or one-to-one sessions in their area of work.
  • In addition to the training offered, the Stop Smoking Service will provide on-going support and resources to Schools, Youth Club etc.
